Course Description

This course emphasizes the consolidation of literacy, communication and critical thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. students will analyze a variety of informational and graphic texts, as well as literacy texts from various countries and cultures and create oral, written and media texts in a variety of forms for practical and academic purposes. An important focus will be on using langauge with precision and clarity and developing greater control in writing. The course is intended to prepare students for college or the workplace.

UNIT 1 Newspapers: Reading, Writing and Understanding
UNIT 2 Advertising
UNIT 3 Graphic Novel (ISU)
UNIT 4 Novel Study-Of Mice and Men
UNIT 5 Novel Study-The Hunger Games
UNIT 6 The Elements of Documentary Film
Final Evaluations Exam (10%) and Culminating Activity (20%)


Class work 70%

This includes activities, assignments, quizzes, news analysis, group discussions, film reviews, self-reflection writing, mini-projects, student lead seminars, debates and written assignments.

Culminating Activity  20%

To be completed during the course. Appropriate class time will be allocated. Students cannot earn this credit if this assignment is not completed.  

Final Exam 15%

Students who do not complete the final exam can not earn this credit.
