Heroes in Star Wars

Princess Leia, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Luke Skywalker are three examples of heroes in the George Lucas movie Star Wars. Leia’s purpose is to help her people and she is able to achieve this mainly by motivating others to fight with the Rebels. Obi-wan is a Jedi knight who teachers Luke the mysterious ways of the Force. Luke takes Obi-Wan’s teaching and puts them into practice by destroying the Death Star.  All these heroes are committed to a significant goal and put others ahead of themselves as they fight the Dark Side.

Princess Leia is determined to protect her home planet against the evil Empire. Although she finds herself in many precarious situations, she is never concerned about herself. During interrogation for instance, she stands up fearlessly to Darth Vader and Grand Moft Tarkin refusing to give them any information which might endanger Aderon. Later, she tells Han that “somebody has to save us kids” and pushes them into the garbage compactor. It is also worth remembering that she is the one who suggests they brace the moving bin walls. Looking out for others is second nature for Princess Leia.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is another selfless hero who acts as Luke’s protector and advisor. He saves Luke from the Sand people’s attack and begins to teach Luke the instinctive ways of using a light-sabre and following the Force. His superior knowledge and special skills are shown in the scenes when he uses telepathy to frustrate the police on the outpost streets and his light sabre on the monsters in the airport bar. He is also the one who shuts down the Death Star’s power/tractor beam and acts as a decoy, sacrificing his life in a duel with Vader so the others might escape. However, Obi-Wan’s spirit and wisdom live on tin the character of Luke Skywalker. The last time they see one another Obi-Wan says “Your destiny lies along a different path from mine.”

In the beginning of the movie, Luke is an adolescent orphan whose goals are to avenge the deaths of his aunt and uncle, and to find the princess recorded by R2-D2.  He follows the message’s lure and ends up enduring many trials on her behalf, rescuing her on the Death Star and becoming the lone pilot who ultimately destroys the Star.  It is necessary in the process that Luke dies to his child self while assuming the responsibility of adulthood. This is accomplished when he instinctively heads the words of his mentor Obi-Wan “to use the force.”

Princess Leia, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker portray several heroic characteristics and attitudes.  Leia’s example gives life and inspiration to her followers. Obi-Wan uses the Force to instruct others and enhance their possibilities. Luke embodies the teachings of his elder god-teacher and puts them into successful practice for a higher purpose. All three heroes are strong, brave and have positive moral impact on their world in the movie Star Wars.
